My name is Rachel Taylor and like most women I wear many many hats.
I have recently had some drastic life changes. During Christmas holidays I made the decision to shut down my successful home business. My business Creations In Cake made custom designed cakes and baked goods for special occasions and weddings. The business had become overwhelming and I had lost my passion for what I was doing. In the beginning I was so excited that I regularly bit of more than I could chew and in five years time found myself feeling burnt out. I wasn't loving what I was doing any more. I wasn't happy and it was hurting my family and home life. I needed a change, so I decided it was time to close shop. When I made that decision I felt a huge wave of relief over come me and I knew it was the right thing to do.
Now I do have another job which will fully support me. This is one of the reasons why it was perhaps easier to let the business go. I am a Red Seal Pastry Chef and I teach the baking and pastry programs at the Owen Sound campus of Georgian College. I've been teaching since September of 2009 and I am really enjoying it. The best way to express your love for something is to share it with someone else. Teaching lets me do that and I think I get the message across.
So now the business is closed, and the school year is done. For the first time I'm not working and it isn't because I just had a baby. I now have more time to do what I've been missing out on the last five years. While the business is gone I still like the idea of having another "job" or "project" in the works. This is were the blog comes in. I'd like to share my loves of cooking, baking, crafting, home keeping, and event planning with whom ever is interested in listening. I really love teaching at the college so I thought why not expand that into my home life and share with the world all the other things I love. My friends and family often ask me for advice on these sorts of things and I imagine maybe there are others out there that would be interested in my ideas too. I'm also going to share a lot of the amazing things that I find online that inspire me. The web is such an incredible resource for creative people.
I spent a lot of time over the last few months listening to Crafty Pod pod casts while I cleaned my house and watched my kids play. CraftyPod really redirected my focus on how this blog should work. If anyone out there is thinking about heading in this direction I'd really recommend it. One thing that really "clicked" with me was in Crafty Pod #93 when Diane says Don't make the mistake of thinking of your blog like a journal. Think of it like a magazine. This made soooooo much sense to me and really got me ginned up for what my blog was going to be.
The podcast that really spoke to me the most right now was CraftyPod #83 where Kim spoke about how she sold her business and was redirecting her life. I really related to her and was thinking about the parallels between her work life with my own. My favorite line of hers which I immediately had to write down because it hit me so intensely was I'm not a finisher, and that's okay. But you want me on your team if you are starting something!
So very true to myself I am very excited to start this new project, hopefully I will stick with it! Today I'm going to re listen to a few of these crafty pods now that I have a clearer idea of where I want this to go.
Cheers!
Rachel
